Project Spotlight: KEITH Leads Multidisciplinary Vision for The Adderley: A Cultural and Community Landmark on Sistrunk Boulevard
Fort Lauderdale, FL — The new Adderley development on Sistrunk Boulevard marks a defining moment for the continued revitalization of one of Fort Lauderdale’s most historic and culturally significant corridors. Named in honor of world-renowned jazz musician Julian “Cannonball” Adderley, who spent his formative years in the neighborhood, the project blends cultural homage with innovative, community driven design.
Early design concepts drew inspiration from Adderley’s iconic sound—integrating rhythmic patterning, expressive geometries, and artistic cues into the architectural and landscape language. This connection to local heritage became the foundation for a project that celebrates Sistrunk’s legacy while creating new opportunities for residents and future generations.

KEITH’s Multidisciplinary Leadership
Serving as a trusted partner from the earliest stages, KEITH led the project’s planning, coordination, and technical execution. The firm’s Landscape Architecture, Civil Engineering, Planning, and Geospatial teams worked seamlessly to deliver an integrated vision grounded in creativity, practicality, and cultural sensitivity. KEITH collaborated closely with the Fort Lauderdale Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA), the City of Fort Lauderdale, and Broward County to ensure alignment with community objectives, regulatory frameworks, and long-term neighborhood goals. Altis Cardinal—our client and developer—also guided the project through permitting and construction, supporting a unified and efficient development process.
A major accomplishment of the project was the strategic undergrounding of overhead utilities along NW 7th Avenue, relocating them into a new duct bank system. This effort removed visual clutter, significantly improving the streetscape and creating a more pleasurable and welcoming view from the public realm. Every inch of the development and surrounding streetscape was purposefully planned to balance essential infrastructure with high quality community amenities—including accessible pathways, lighting, benches, bike racks, lush landscaping, water features, art, and a continuous canopy of street trees. The result is a cohesive, functional, and visually enhanced urban environment that elevates the experience for residents and visitors alike.
Celebrating Culture Through Design and Collaborative Community Partnership
Art, history, and community identity are embedded throughout The Adderley. Streetscapes, public realm elements, and open spaces incorporate subtle jazz inspired influences, honoring Cannonball Adderley’s contributions while enriching the pedestrian experience. The development provides housing, amenities, and cultural expression in a way that reinforces Sistrunk’s narrative and strengthens its sense of place.
The project was built on true partnership. Early development leaders UrbanCO and Felipe Yalale played a critical role in shaping the vision and engaging long standing neighborhood institutions. Their work supporting local churches—including relocation and redevelopment assistance—helped maintain cultural continuity and deepen community ties. Ultimately developed by Altis Cardinal, the project retained its early roots of community centric design.
A Model for Transformative, Community Focused Development
This project represents what is possible when developers, designers, public agencies, and the community come together with a shared purpose. The Adderley honors the past while creating a place that will serve the community well in the future. The Adderley stands as a model of multidisciplinary excellence, cultural celebration, and community collaboration, setting a new benchmark for transformative development in Fort Lauderdale and the approach to multi-family residential that aims to align as hero housing.
